- ZCash block explorers incorrectly showed no activity, sparking outage rumors after a network upgrade.
- The Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL) implemented a two-stage patch to fix a vulnerability in its Orchard shielded pool.
- Despite the confusion, the Zcash network continued operating normally, and the price of ZEC rose 10% in 24 hours.
- Separately, Kraken‘s Ink network experienced actual chain-wide outages for over 24 hours due to a client bug.
The privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash faced widespread rumors of a network outage this week after a crucial security upgrade. However, the issue stemmed from popular block explorers displaying outdated data, not an actual system failure. This confusion began Monday during a “coordinated network upgrade” to patch a vulnerability in its shielded Orchard pool.
An X account called Solid Intel claimed the network was down, a post that gained over 180,000 views. Others, like Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz, quickly pointed out normal activity on alternate explorers. Solid Intel posted an update 45 minutes later clarifying the block explorers were catching up.
The Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL) explained the fix involved a soft fork to disable Orchard, followed by a hard fork to fully restore it. Consequently, the rumors did not hurt ZEC’s market value, which rose 10% according to CoinGecko data.
Meanwhile, Kraken’s layer-two network Ink experienced real outages. Its X account announced “chain-wide outages with intermittent network availability” on Tuesday. An update almost a day later explained the disruption was caused by a bug in a node client. This incident follows similar downtime last week on the Sui network related to a major upgrade.
