- Wolf Game 2.0’s Solana relaunch has been halted following massive player backlash over confusing mechanics that required burning valuable NFT assets.
- The game’s CEO has stepped down and liquidity was removed from the recently launched Solana token amid community calls for a revival.
- Players are now pushing for a community takeover (CTO), with the game’s CC0 licensing making it possible for new developers to utilize original artwork.
Wolf Game halted its controversial 2.0 relaunch on Solana this Monday following intense player backlash. The four-year-old blockchain game removed liquidity from its recently launched Solana token, and CEO GFunk announced his resignation. Players expressed outrage over new mechanics that required them to burn their valuable NFT assets accumulated over years of gameplay on Ethereum and Blast networks.
“Based on community feedback, we will be halting Wolf Game 2.0 and liquidity will be removed from the SOL token,” the official Wolf Game account announced on Twitter. The statement indicated that GFunk was meeting with the Farmhands Council to determine next steps.
From Beloved Game to Community Backlash
The original Wolf Game, launched in 2021, featured a unique gameplay loop where players owned either sheep or wolf NFTs. Sheep owners could farm WOOL tokens, while wolves could steal these earnings and even other players’ sheep NFTs. This crypto-native gameplay earned a dedicated following, leading to Pixel Vault acquiring the game in August 2023.
Last Wednesday’s Wolf Game 2.0 relaunch introduced radical changes, requiring players to burn their existing wolves, sheep, land, and other NFT assets in exchange for new in-game assets like “Shep’s Kiss.” Community member Digital Optimyst voiced frustration, asking, “What the hell is Shep’s Kiss? You’re asking us to burn our wolves, sheep, lands, and other assets. Why would you destroy something with a strong, loyal community?”
Players complained about confusing mechanics with insufficient explanation from developers. One player stated they had “no clue what’s happening,” while community member FarmerPiddy took it upon himself to explain the new mechanics.
Community Takeover Possibilities
Multiple Farmhand Council members claimed via Discord they hadn’t seen proposals for the changes before implementation. Council member JohnStargaryen revealed they only saw the new version a week before rollout, with several members voicing concerns against launching.
The situation has sparked calls for a community takeover (CTO) to revive the game. Crypto venture capitalist Beanie commented, “I’ve never seen greater lore for a CTO since Pudgy Penguins. The best part is that Wolf Game art is CC0. Great opportunity for an aspiring dev to come in.”
Wolf Game’s Creative Commons Zero (CC0) licensing means its artwork is in the public domain, allowing free use and commercialization. This could enable a community-driven revival using official artwork without requiring formal acquisition.
The Wolf Game team has pledged to restore burned assets while working on “next steps” for the title, but the community’s trust appears severely damaged by the failed relaunch.
