United Boeing 787 Elevated Adds Houston Long-Haul New Routes

United Airlines adds four premium-heavy 787-9 routes from Houston starting October 2026.

  • United Airlines is adding four new long-haul routes from Houston with its premium-heavy Boeing 787-9 Elevated interior, expanding to eight total routes.
  • The aircraft features 222 seats, including 64 business-class and 35 premium-economy seats, as part of a strategy to boost revenue through premium cabins.
  • Houston becomes the second hub for Elevated service after San Francisco, with routes to Sao Paulo, Sydney, Tokyo Narita, and London Heathrow starting October 2026.

United Airlines is deploying its Boeing 787-9 Elevated interior on four new long-haul routes out of Houston, bringing its premium-heavy 787-9 network to eight total routes. The jets carry 222 seats, with 64 in business class and 35 in premium economy, reflecting the carrier’s bet that premium cabins can lift revenue and UAL stock.

Starting in October 2026, the aircraft will serve Sao Paulo, Sydney, and Tokyo Narita from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The airline will add London Heathrow on January 5, 2027, with the Houston-to-Tokyo sector covering 6,643 miles and the Sydney service exceeding 17 hours.

San Francisco International Airport launched the program first, with an Elevated 787-9 flying to Singapore on April 22, 2026, followed by London Heathrow eight days later. United Airlines is adding Zurich on September 8 and Seoul Incheon on September 15, expecting roughly 30 of these aircraft to carry the Elevated interior by year’s end.

Andrew Nocella, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at United Airlines, said: “We never stand still and are always looking for more ways to set ourselves apart from other carriers.” He added that the redesigned aircraft provides upgraded amenities in every cabin.

Premium cabins generate higher margins than standard economy, so load factors on routes like Zurich, Seoul, and Sydney will be closely watched by investors. The Houston expansion pushes the airline’s premium footprint into a second hub for the first time, signaling a long-haul strategy that leans heavily on business class and premium economy.
