- Spotify and Universal Music Group announced licensing deals allowing Premium users to create AI-generated covers and remixes.
- The paid add-on will share revenue with participating artists and songwriters, including major stars like Taylor Swift and The Weeknd.
- The move follows previous industry conflicts over unauthorized AI music and mirrors expanding AI remix tools on platforms like YouTube.
Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) announced landmark licensing agreements on Thursday, paving the way for Premium subscribers to legally create AI-generated fan covers and remixes. This deal directly addresses the growing demand for AI-powered music creation while attempting to protect artist rights.
The initiative is designed as a paid add-on, with revenue from AI-generated works being shared with the participating artists and songwriters. UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge stated, “That principle is at the heart of this pioneering AI-enabled superfan initiative, which is designed to support human artistry.”
This agreement follows significant industry turmoil over unauthorized AI music, such as a fake Drake and Weeknd track that spread online in 2023. Consequently, the framework emphasizes consent, credit, and compensation, according to Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström.
Meanwhile, other major platforms are also expanding AI tools for users, as seen with YouTube’s recent introduction of a Shorts Remix feature powered by Gemini Omni. The music industry is thus moving to formalize and monetize a trend that was previously a source of legal conflict.
