- Ethereum‘s Sepolia testnet activated the Glamsterdam upgrade on October 6, boosting the block gas limit to nearly 200 million — more than three times the mainnet’s 60 million ceiling
- Early blocks on Sepolia are using between 24% and 43% of the new limit, leaving significant headroom for future demand
- No mainnet upgrade has been scheduled, so Ethereum’s main network maintains its 60 million gas limit for now
Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet activated the Glamsterdam upgrade on October 6, producing blocks with a gas limit of nearly 200 million — more than three times the 60 million that Ethereum’s main network allows. The upgrade went live at epoch 353,024, a 6.4-minute marker scheduled to begin at 13:53:36 UTC.
Blocks on Sepolia are using only a fraction of that capacity. A snapshot of 25 consecutive blocks on Etherscan shows gas usage between 47.1 million and 85.9 million, roughly 24% to 43% of the limit.
A higher gas limit does not guarantee more transactions, but it provides headroom that can prevent fee spikes during congestion. Bigger blocks place additional strain on validators, and Ethereum Foundation researchers previously warned that limits above 40 million could “fail to propagate as expected” across the network.
The gas limit has risen gradually through governance. A validator vote in February 2025 moved it from 30 million to 32 million, and the Fusaka upgrade on December 3, 2025, set 60 million as the default.
Two roadmap changes aim to help the network handle more load. Block-level access lists allow validators to check multiple transactions simultaneously, while enshrined proposer-builder separation moves block assembly auctions into Ethereum’s core protocol.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin outlined a broader vision in July, describing a plan to replace major protocol components over three to four years. Glamsterdam represents a nearer-term step, with developers eyeing a potential gas-limit increase toward 200 million on mainnet.
The announcement sets no date for the Hoodi testnet and schedules no mainnet upgrade, so Ethereum’s main network keeps its 60 million gas limit for now.
