Nvidia CEO touts GPUs as revenue-generating assets

Nvidia CEO says GPUs are revenue-generating assets as rental prices soar

  • NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says the company’s GPUs are a “productive, revenue-generating asset” as H100 rental prices climb 22% in a month.
  • OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-6 Astra, was trained on more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs, according to Huang.
  • Nvidia shares have risen 23.7% year to date, trailing the 73% gain in the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX).

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is strengthening the investment thesis for the company’s AI chips, calling its compute infrastructure a “productive, revenue-generating asset” as demand for its GPUs drives the AI boom. Huang made the statement in a post on X, responding to a user who noted that rental prices for the three-year-old H100 GPU had risen 22% over the past month to $3.28 per hour, challenging traditional depreciation logic.

NVDA shares rose 1% in overnight trading heading into Tuesday, extending a three-session winning streak that lifted the stock over 6.5%. Huang argues the chips function as income-producing infrastructure that can retain or increase their economic value over time.

Meanwhile, Huang highlighted the massive scale of computing used for OpenAI’s latest model in a separate post on X. “GPT-6 Astra, trained on ~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72,” he wrote, adding that the industry had moved from ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in four years.

Nvidia also recently agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, taking control of a platform Hosting millions of AI models and datasets. The chipmaker is reportedly in talks to invest $2.5 billion in Thinking Machines Lab, the AI startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati.

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment for NVDA dipped to ‘neutral’ on Monday. One trader commented on Huang’s AGI declaration, stating, “Still no agreed definition of what AGI even means, so anyone can declare it whenever.” Year to date, NVDA stock is up 23.7%, compared to the 73% gain in the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX).
