Vitalik Buterin said on Sunday that EIP-8141, a proposal letting Ethereum users pay fees in tokens or have them sponsored, has been quietly advancing for months. The proposal replaces Ethereum’s fixed transaction structure with up to 64 “frames,” each functioning as an ordinary contract call according to the official specification.
One frame validates the transaction, another approves gas payment, and the rest execute the user’s intended actions. Splitting payment approval into its own step breaks the link between the signing account and the funding account.
Consequently, wallets holding only stablecoins could pay fees in ERC-20 tokens, and applications could sponsor transactions outright. This functionality has existed since 2023 through ERC-4337, but only via a separate mempool and third-party bundlers.
Frames operates in Ethereum’s public mempool with protocol-level validation rules. The specification defines “default code” that gives externally owned accounts the same sponsored transactions and token-paid gas without requiring smart account migration.
The proposal also enables batched actions that succeed or fail together, eliminating dangling token approvals. It unlinks accounts from ECDSA keys, making key rotation possible for the first time.
Authors describe Frames as a “native off-ramp” from elliptic-curve cryptography ahead of quantum computing threats. Co-author Matt Garnett notes that post-quantum signatures require several kilobytes each, pushing the network toward signature aggregation.
The proposal remains a draft since January and is not scheduled for any upgrade. Buterin pointed to a testnet run by the ethrex client pairing Frames with FOCIL for censorship-resistant privacy protocols.
