- The Dutch Central Bank (DNB) confirmed moving 86 tonnes of Gold from the US and Canada to London due to “increasing geopolitical unrest.”
- The move aims to improve liquidity, as the gold can be traded more easily in London for deployment in a crisis.
- The Netherlands now holds 32.1% of its gold in London, up from 18.1%, while total reserves stand at 612.4 tonnes worth $84 billion.
- DNB President Olaf Sleijpen stated the transfer strengthens resilience, even though the bank assumes the gold will never need to be deployed.
- The decision signals a loss of faith in the US, historically considered a bedrock of safe investments, amid rising national debt and foreign policy concerns.
The Dutch Central Bank (DNB) confirmed on Wednesday that it moved 86 tonnes of gold out of the US, citing “increasing geopolitical unrest” as the primary reason. The gold was transferred from New York and Ottawa to London, where DNB President Olaf Sleijpen said it can be deployed more quickly in a crisis. “This makes it the quickest for DNB to deploy in a crisis situation,” the central bank stated. “With this step, we have improved the deployability of the gold reserves.”
The total Dutch gold stock amounts to 612.4 tonnes, valued at $84 billion. Consequently, the share of the Netherlands’ gold held in London surged from 18.1% to 32.1%, while the central bank retains 30% of its reserves domestically. The transfer was executed through a combination of buying, selling, and physical transport to spread risk. The US, once considered the bedrock of safe investments, is now experiencing a major shift in confidence.
