Bitcoin Surges to $81,812 on Fed Rate Hold Hopes

Bitcoin surges past $80,000 on Fed rate hold signal, weaker dollar, and MicroStrategy buying spree

  • Bitcoin surged past $80,000 to $81,812 on September 3 after Fed Governor Christopher Waller signaled he could support holding interest rates steady.
  • Waller’s dovish comments weakened the U.S. dollar and pushed Treasury yields lower, creating a favorable environment for risk assets.
  • Analysts cited macro drivers and a reported MicroStrategy buying spree as catalysts, with on-chain data suggesting a possible ascent to $100,000 by year-end.

Bitcoin prices rallied sharply on Thursday, September 3, breaking through the $80,000 level to reach $81,812.31, according to Coinbase data from TradingView. The world’s most prominent digital currency gained more than 6.3% after falling to $76,929.29 earlier in the day.

Analysts attributed the move to remarks from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller, who stated he would be “inclined” to keep benchmark rates steady at the upcoming FOMC meeting, as reported by The Financial Times. “While inflation remains meaningfully above the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) 2 percent goal, recent data suggest we are finally seeing some signs of disinflation,” Waller stated. “If this continues in the data due over the next two weeks, I would be inclined to support holding the target for the federal funds rate at its current setting.”

Consequently, Treasury yields fell and the U.S. dollar declined against other currencies, according to The Financial Times. Ryan Myher, COO of Genius Terminal, noted via email: “Bitcoin moved sharply higher on Thursday after Federal Reserve Governor Chris Waller said he could support leaving interest rates unchanged at next month’s meeting if incoming inflation data continues to move in the right direction.” He added that the comments reassured investors the Fed might not need to tighten further, weakening the dollar and pushing yields lower.

Erin Gambrel, head of financial services at Corgi, echoed that view, stating: “This was largely a macro-driven move. A lot of today’s move comes back to interest rates.” Meanwhile, William Stern, founder of Cardiff, pointed to a dovish Fed signal and noted that MicroStrategy reportedly resumed a $370 million buying spree, calling it “great signals.” Paul Howard, senior director at Wincent, offered a bullish outlook, stating: “Bitcoin breaking the $80k wall, fuelled by $100m of ETF inflows and OTC activity was enough to banish the bears ahead of US economic data.” He added that on-chain data and a memecoin revival on RobinHood chain suggest “a steady ascent back to $100k before year-end.”
