An effective altruism-linked organization called Irreplaceable is paying $2,000 in weekly compensation for organizers to lead an anti-AI media campaign this October, with walkouts planned at over 100 colleges. The group employs a campaign strategist who also works for the effective altruism-funded Center for AI Safety, according to a recruitment page.
Irreplaceable launched on August 28 with veterans from climate groups like Sunrise Movement and 350.org. “What’s missing is coordinated action that forces the government to respond,” the group claimed, arguing that AI should be paused and placed under public control.
Critics have described the effort as an astroturfing campaign. Each paid organizer will coordinate roughly a dozen flagship campuses, handling outreach, political partnerships, and a digital creator program.
Effective altruism has strong historical ties to the crypto industry through Sam Bankman-Fried and other FTX associates like Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang. Irreplaceable’s privacy page names an Education Fund and Action Fund but discloses no donors.
The Atlantic has identified Jeremy Ornstein as an Irreplaceable strategist who concurrently serves at the Center for AI Safety. An AI Safety fellowship founder described Irreplaceable as originating from the Center for AI Safety itself.
