- OpenAI President Greg Brockman said the new GPT-6 Astra model could mark the arrival of artificial general intelligence.
- The model launches first to companies in OpenAI’s Daybreak Cybersecurity program, with wider access rolling out in the coming days.
- Astra arrives days after rival Anthropic released its Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 models, intensifying the AI leadership race.
OpenAI on Thursday released GPT-6 Astra, its latest Artificial Intelligence model, with President Greg Brockman calling it a “generational leap” that could eventually be viewed as the arrival of artificial general intelligence. The model is initially limited to organizations in OpenAI’s application-based Daybreak cybersecurity program, with a wider rollout to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers expected in the coming days, according to Axios.
Brockman told reporters at a press briefing that, looking back in a few years, people may identify the current period as the point when AGI was created. “If we fast-forward a couple of years, and we look back and say, ‘When was it, really, that AGI was created?’ I think it’s going to be about this time, and I think it might be about this model,” he said, as reported by The Verge.
OpenAI has designated Astra as the first model meeting its “critical cybersecurity capability threshold” and added new safeguards following the Hugging Face breach. The company believes these measures “sufficiently minimize the risk of severe harm for release” and will prevent the model from Hacking a rival’s internal systems.
Meanwhile, the release comes just days after Anthropic launched its Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 models, which the company said push new frontiers in scientific, coding, and reasoning tasks. Both firms now claim leadership in advanced AI capabilities, with OpenAI calling Astra “the world’s most intelligent and aligned model” and Anthropic describing Fable 5.1 as setting a new standard for coding and problem-solving.
Retail sentiment on Stocktwits for the ticker OPEAZZX was ‘bullish’ at the time of writing. The Pentagon’s recent classification of Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” adds another layer of regulatory scrutiny to the AI race.
