- CFTC Chair Michael Selig said autonomous AI agents could soon manage crypto assets and trades, raising regulatory questions.
- Selig questioned whether developers of such agents need registration and who is liable if an agent “goes rogue.”
- A recent EToro survey found 79% of US millennial investors and 77% of Gen Z investors already use or are open to using AI for investing.
- The Bank of England warned that widespread use of similar AI models could amplify market shocks.
Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Michael Selig told attendees at the agency’s inaugural Frontier Forum in Washington, DC, on Wednesday that it is “no longer science fiction” to imagine a refrigerator autonomously buying groceries with Ether staking rewards or even launching its own memecoin. Selig argued regulators must adapt to a financial system where AI agents can hold assets and execute trades autonomously.
He noted that the CFTC’s current framework was built around “identifiable market participants” and asked whether developers of autonomous agents should register, who is liable if an agent acts unpredictably, and if regulators need a new “know-your-agent” standard. Selig pointed to his prepared remarks to emphasize that “super intelligence” is real.
The comments come as younger investors increasingly embrace AI for money management. An eToro survey published in September found that 79% of US millennial investors and 77% of Gen Z investors already used or were open to using AI to select or adjust investments.
Selig said AI could democratize trading by giving smaller participants access to risk-management tools once reserved for larger institutions. However, he warned that autonomous agents might react unexpectedly and that correlated behavior from similar models could create systemic risks. The Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee similarly warned last year that widespread use of similar models could amplify market shocks.
Meanwhile, major crypto exchanges are already rolling out tools for autonomous trading. Coinbase introduced Agentic Wallets in February, and Binance launched AI Agent Skills in March, allowing agents to place and manage spot orders.
