- Andreessen Horowitz dropped “crypto” from its flagship fund, rebranding it as the “frontier” while vowing to keep investing in digital assets.
- The firm’s past predictions — including 1 billion daily crypto users by 2025 and Bitcoin as the new internet — have not materialized.
- Former partner Ali Yahya exited a16z after previously claiming the firm was “100% committed on crypto,” and several other bold forecasts now appear overstated.
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has removed the word “crypto” from its flagship fund branding, now calling it the “frontier,” as reported by Decrypt. The firm has stated it “will continue to invest in crypto” but considers the move an expansion of its focus.
This rebranding marks a notable shift for a firm whose partners once made towering predictions about crypto’s future. In 2023, then-general partner Ali Yahya told CoinDesk that a16z was “100% committed on crypto as a space,” criticizing “fair weather” venture capitalists pivoting to AI. More recently, Yahya announced his departure from the firm, noting he cares “most about building infrastructure that enables open software ecosystems.”
Chris Dixon, an a16z general partner, said on a Apple.com/us/podcast/crypto-fund-5-we-raised-%242-2b-heres-why/id842818711?i=1000766603218″ rel=”noopener”>podcast that getting a billion daily crypto users would be immensely valuable. Yet a16z’s own 2025 State of Crypto report estimates only 40 to 70 million monthly active users exist.
Ben Horowitz once warned the U.S. needed to reach “world-class” in crypto or Artificial Intelligence “might destroy us.” In 2014, Marc Andreessen predicted that “in 20 years, we’ll talk about Bitcoin the way we talk about the internet today.”
Then-partner Arianna Simpson forecast that hundreds of millions of crypto users would come from gaming, specifically citing Axie Infinity. That game subsequently collapsed.
In 2022, Dixon proclaimed web3 would power the next computing cycle, asserting “we think we are now entering the golden era of web3.” Yahya had argued in 2021 that DAOs could improve “social mechanisms of coordinating humans and capital,” a prediction that now appears quaint as DAOs are frequently ignored or exploited.
Sriram Krishnan, an a16z general partner, predicted in 2021 that all online content would be “NFT-ised,” asking readers to “imagine every TikTok video having an owner.” On Joe Rogan’s show, Andreessen predicted politicians would cryptographically sign every statement for an immutable record.
Horowitz also bet in 2014 that 10% of Americans would use Bitcoin monthly by 2019 — a bet he lost. Only time will tell if crypto stays at the frontier for a16z.
