Researchers from East Texas A&M University have published Post-Quantum Lightning Network (PQLN), introducing the first quantum-proof defense for Bitcoin’s primary layer-2 scaling network. The solution implements quantum-resistant cryptography without changing Bitcoin’s code, running alongside existing nodes.
This breakthrough addresses worries that quantum computers could eventually break Bitcoin’s cryptographic security, a risk that Google highlighted in a paper earlier this year. Consequently, Ethereum and Solana have already begun working on post-quantum measures, leaving Bitcoin as one of the last major projects to receive such protection.
