US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is reportedly being considered as President Donald Trump’s next Artificial Intelligence czar, according to three sources familiar with the matter who told Semafor. The news comes days after Trump announced plans for an “AI Force” amid mounting concerns about the technology’s risks.
The position became vacant after Trump previously tapped David Sacks as his AI and crypto czar, though Sacks stepped down earlier this year after reaching his service limit as a special government employee. Consequently, Bessent has emerged as a frontrunner for the role, though the White House has not confirmed the report.
Other candidates being eyed include the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios, Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor, and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross. Kupor previously served as a managing partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
However, White House spokesperson Kush Desai pushed back against the report, telling Semafor that “any reporting about personnel decisions that have not been officially announced by the administration should be regarded as baseless speculation.” The administration has not yet made an official announcement regarding the AI czar position.
