The use of the US dollar for cross-border transactions is rising, reaching a record high in daily trading volume despite developing countries advancing de-dollarization policies. According to the Bank for International Settlements Triennial Central Bank Survey, the greenback appeared in 89.2% of all currency trades settled in 2025.
This figure slightly rose from 88.4% in 2022, before the de-dollarization process went viral. Consequently, total daily trading in the US dollar reached a record high of $9.6 trillion in April 2025.
Meanwhile, the euro took a share of 28.9%, the Japanese yen was used in 16.8% of trades, and the British pound was settled in 10.2% of trades. The Chinese yuan came fifth with a record of 8.5% in cross-border transactions, rising from 7.0% in 2022.
However, a large number of Chinese yuan payments are mostly settled outside mainland China, with 30% taking place in Hong Kong and 22% done in the United Kingdom. This contrasts sharply with the US dollar, which is settled worldwide without a single base system.
