The Bitcoin Red Team, led by pseudonymous developer Calle, is deploying Chinese AI models to systematically scan the Bitcoin open-source ecosystem for security vulnerabilities, according to Calle on X. The volunteer group combines AI tools with human review to examine wallets, Lightning applications, and software libraries.
Researchers privately report credible findings to developers so flaws can be fixed before public disclosure. The team has primarily used Kimi K3 from Chinese startup Moonshot AI, along with GLM 5.2 from Z.ai.
American models from OpenAI and Anthropic have proven limiting due to restrictions on security research. “Red team rugged by OpenAI cyber again,” Calle posted earlier this week. “Don’t like asking for permission. Loading up Kiimi K3.”
In August, the group reported 4,962 findings across 390 projects, including 85 rated critical and 635 rated high severity. Calle said developers confirmed “a ton of real critical and high vulnerabilities.”
Lightning software was particularly difficult to review due to its complexity, with Calle calling it “more broken than the average.” He urged projects to establish their own AI audit pipelines.
Calle warned against relying on unmaintained projects, noting that AI has intensified security pressure on developers. “Sometimes old things need to burn so new things can grow on healthy soil,” he wrote.
