U.S. Blocks Anthropic’s Top AI Models Over Security Fears

U.S. blocks foreign access to Anthropic AI over disputed safety vulnerability rift.

  • The U.S. government ordered Anthropic to suspend foreign access to its advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, over a national security concern.
  • Anthropic complied but disputed the severity of the cited jailbreak vulnerability, arguing it is simple and replicable with other public models like OpenAI‘s GPT-5.5.
  • Officials, including adviser David Sacks, claim Anthropic refused to fix the issue, prompting the export control order and highlighting a rift over AI safety.

The U.S. government issued an emergency directive ordering Anthropic on Friday to immediately suspend access for all foreign nationals to its two most powerful AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5. This sweeping export control, citing an undisclosed national security risk, forced the company to disable the models for its entire customer base. However, Anthropic strongly disputed the government’s finding regarding a potential jailbreak vulnerability.

The company reviewed a demonstration and concluded the vulnerability was relatively simple and already widely available from competitors. “If this standard was applied across the industry,” Anthropic warned, “we believe it would essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers.” Consequently, this action sets a contentious precedent for AI regulation and deployment. Meanwhile, the company is working to restore access to the models as soon as possible.

On Saturday, presidential adviser David Sacks wrote on X that a trusted partner provided a jailbreak and that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused to fix it or deactivate the model. Sacks claimed “Anthropic prioritized the continued offering of the consumer model over safety,” which contradicted its public safety ethos. He added that the administration hopes Anthropic will resolve the issue, stating “The ball is in Anthropic’s court.”

This conflict follows a previous standoff where Anthropic refused a government agreement on surveillance and autonomous weapons, which President Donald Trump slammed. The Department of Defense subsequently labeled the firm a supply chain risk, a designation Anthropic has challenged in court. Despite the friction, reports suggest relations had cooled as the government sought to use the company’s advanced models.
