Trump Fires IRS Commissioner Billy Long After Two Months in Role

Trump Ousts IRS Commissioner Billy Long After Two Months Amid Agency Shakeup

  • President Donald Trump removed IRS Commissioner Billy Long just two months after his appointment.
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will act as commissioner until a permanent replacement is named.
  • Billy Long was a former congressman and longtime Trump ally with limited experience in tax administration.
  • During his short term, Long put two top IRS officials on administrative leave and supported significant agency workforce changes.
  • No official comments have been made by Long or the IRS about his departure; sources expect Long to be nominated for an ambassadorship.

President Donald Trump has dismissed IRS Commissioner Billy Long after only two months in the position, according to a report from the New York Times. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to step in as acting commissioner while the administration searches for a permanent replacement.

Billy Long, a former Republican member of Congress and staunch ally of President Trump, had little experience in tax policy before taking the helm of the agency. His appointment surprised many in Washington due to his previous calls for dismantling the IRS while in Congress, a move described by some as unexpected.

During his short tenure, Long placed two top IRS officials on administrative leave, aligning with some Republican lawmakers pushing to downsize the agency’s workforce. He also reportedly expressed support for calls to “purge” certain employees within the department. According to the New York Times, the agency has already experienced several layoffs this year.

Sources cited in the report expect Long may soon be nominated to an ambassador position. During Long’s brief leadership, there have been six different individuals serving as the IRS’s commissioner in 2025.

Neither Billy Long nor the IRS have issued any public statements regarding his dismissal.
