- Tesla signed $30 billion in unused senior unsecured bank facilities, including a $20 billion term loan and two revolvers totaling $10 billion.
- The company drew nothing at signing and does not plan to borrow in 2026, reserving the lines for future capital expenditures.
- As of June 30, Tesla held $43.52 billion in cash and short-term investments, with 2026 capex expected to exceed $25 billion for AI compute, robotaxi, and Optimus projects.
Shares of Tesla (TSLA) edged 0.3% higher after hours Tuesday after the company secured $30 billion in unused bank credit lines, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The package replaces a previous $5 billion revolver and positions the automaker for a major capital expenditure push tied to its Artificial Intelligence and robotics ambitions.
The facilities include a $20 billion three-year delayed-draw term loan led by Citibank, $8 billion five-year revolver, and a $2 billion 364-day revolver, with the option to add $4 billion to the revolvers if lenders agree. Tesla can draw the term loan in up to 10 installments over 18 months, with unused room declining over time and any borrowed amount due by September 2029.
Meanwhile, the company’s cash position remains strong: at June 30, Tesla held $15.22 billion in cash and $28.31 billion in short-term investments, totaling $43.52 billion. First-half capital spending reached $8.28 billion, more than double the prior year, and the company projects 2026 capex of over $25 billion.
That spending will fund AI compute and data centers, factory and R&D lines, company-run AI assets, and expansion of retail, service, and charging networks. CFO Vaibhav Taneja has indicated the spending rate will rise into 2027–2028 as robotaxi, Optimus, AI chip, and solar projects scale. Management says the core business can fund itself but may use the credit lines to maintain liquidity during the ramp.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around TSLA stock remained neutral over the past 24 hours, with message volume low. One user expressed optimism that the company is not issuing shares to raise capital. TSLA stock has fallen 22% year-to-date.
