Healey jabs Farage with ‘BTC account’ Truss comparison

Healey mocks Farage's Bitcoin plan, draws crypto ire, unveils £300M factory and submarine contracts.

  • UK Chancellor John Healey mocked Nigel Farage’s fiscal plans by comparing them to a “BTC account” handled by former PM Liz Truss.
  • Bitcoin supporters criticized Healey’s technical ignorance, noting Bitcoin uses wallets, not accounts, and that his joke revealed a poor grasp of scarcity economics.
  • Healey announced £300M ($390M) Rolls-Royce factory investment and £6B ($7.8B) submarine contracts to support a “new age of industrialisation.”

At Labour’s 2026 party conference, Chancellor John Healey ridiculed Reform leader Nigel Farage’s economic vision by comparing it to a “BTC account” handled by former prime minister Liz Truss. Healey’s quip referenced Truss’s disastrous 44-day premiership, which triggered a market meltdown and a Tory rebellion that forced her resignation.

Truss’s financial policies were widely criticised for destabilizing UK markets. Healey’s remarks, captured on video, appeared to suggest that pairing Bitcoin with Truss would recreate the “fantasy funding” ideals of Farage.

The comments sparked immediate backlash from the crypto community. Bitcoin advocate Freddie New, CEO of B HODL, said Healey is “gleefully ignorant that he thinks it is possible to have a ‘BTC account,'” while podcaster Peter McCormack asserted that Healey’s dismissive joke shows “a woeful understanding of economics, particularly scarcity.” Many critics on X pointed out the technical error: Bitcoin users hold wallets, not accounts—a distinction that underscores the asset’s decentralization.

Meanwhile, Healey pivoted to his industrial agenda, announcing a £300M (~$390M) Rolls-Royce factory investment and £6B (~$7.8B) in government contracts for new submarine docks, according to The Times. He also unveiled a National Wealth Fund aimed at creating 130,000 jobs by 2030, along with a £100M (~$130M) apprenticeship scheme, as reported by the Labour party. Healey, who previously served as defence secretary under Sir Keir Starmer before resigning in June over defence spending disputes, frames these policies as a “new age of industrialisation.”
