Tesla needs marketing push for robotaxis, Optimus: Fund manager

Gary Black says Tesla needs marketing strategy for robotaxi adoption, stock down 25%.

  • Future Fund Managing Partner Gary Black argues Tesla needs a long-term marketing strategy, not just word-of-mouth and Elon Musk’s posts, to boost robotaxi and Optimus robot adoption.
  • Black calls Tesla’s decision to end production of the Model S and Model X a “strategic mistake” and questions its 195-times 2026 price-to-earnings valuation.
  • Tesla shares have fallen over 25% in 2026, making it the worst-performing Magnificent 7 stock, and retail sentiment on Stocktwits remains bearish.

Future Fund Managing Partner Gary Black on Thursday said in a post on X that Tesla cannot rely on word-of-mouth and Elon Musk’s social-media posts to promote its robotaxi service and Optimus robot.

“To increase its enterprise value, TSLA needs to invest in a long-term marketing strategy and branding,” Black argued, comparing Tesla to Apple, which he said became a $4.4 trillion company through branding, not just great products.

Black also called Tesla’s decision to discontinue the premium Model S and Model X vehicles a “strategic mistake,” according to his post. He noted that Tesla eliminated its U.S. growth content team in 2024, a move reported by Bloomberg, as part of broader layoffs.

Meanwhile, Black questioned Tesla’s roughly 195-times 2026 price-to-earnings valuation. He said the company’s autonomous robotaxi fleet remains “stuck” at around 90 to 100 vehicles.

“Key question: What’s going to change this?” Black wrote, linking these decisions to Tesla’s five-year stock underperformance. TSLA shares were down 0.6% at the time of writing, and have declined more than 25% so far in 2026.

Retail sentiment on Stocktwits remained bearish over the past 24 hours, though one user believes a merger between Tesla and SpaceX is imminent.
