Tesla Launches Three-Row Model Y L in U.S.

Tesla launches US Model Y L SUV amid record deliveries but falling stock price.

  • Tesla launched a new three-row Model Y L SUV in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, a variant originally developed for the Chinese market.
  • The Launch Series model starts at $61,990, offering enhanced interior space and comes as the company retires its older Model S and X vehicles.
  • Despite the launch, Tesla shares traded 8% lower, even after the company reported record Q2 deliveries of 480,126 vehicles.

EV giant Tesla Inc (TSLA) launched a new variant of its best-selling Model Y SUV in the U.S. and Puerto Rico on Thursday, positioning it as a spacious three-row, six-seat electric crossover. The company announced the launch in a post on X, accompanied by photos and video showcasing the vehicle’s interior layout and features.

The Model Y L originated as a China-specific variant developed to address local preferences for larger, more spacious family vehicles. Consequently, its design provides a significantly extended wheelbase and markedly improved third-row space compared to the standard Model Y’s optional third row.

Tesla’s website shows the launch series version starting at $61,990, significantly higher than the base version’s starting price of around $40,000. The Launch Series edition includes one year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Supercharging, Premium Connectivity, and free choice of any exterior paint, interior color, and wheel option.

The Model Y L fills a gap in Tesla’s lineup by offering a genuinely usable three-row configuration. This launch comes on the heels of Tesla retiring its older Model S and X vehicles in the second quarter.

Despite the new product launch, shares of the company traded 8% lower at the time of writing. However, Tesla earlier on Thursday announced it delivered 480,126 vehicles in Q2, marking its strongest Q2 on record and representing solid 25% year-over-year growth.

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around TSLA stock stayed within the ‘bullish’ territory while message volume was at ‘high’ levels. A Stocktwits user expressed hopes for a good Q2 earnings report in light of the company’s strong delivery numbers, according to reports.
