Tesla Inc. (TSLA) announced that its upcoming Cybercab autonomous vehicle will integrate SpaceX’s Starlink connectivity primarily for navigation, customer service, and fleet management, AI chief Ashok Elluswamy confirmed. The executive clarified that the integration is not intended for safety purposes, as Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system relies on onboard cameras, sensors, and computing power.
The company posted a detailed cutaway rendering of the Cybercab on Monday, highlighting “Starlink Integration” alongside the FSD computer, external cameras, antennas, and interior microphones. X user Chuck Cook called the integration “a big deal,” suggesting it could improve dynamic rerouting and real-time fleet data sharing in areas with weak cellular coverage.
However, Elluswamy replied directly to Cook, stating: “It is still not required for safe operation of the vehicle. Connectivity is primarily meant for navigation, customer service and, in general, fleet management.” Tesla is preparing to scale its robotaxi fleet with the Cybercab, a purpose-built, steer-by-wire vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals for unsupervised autonomous operation.
Currently, the robotaxi fleet includes Model Y vehicles, and the company expanded its service to Tampa and Orlando, Florida on Tuesday. Meanwhile, robotaxis continue to face safety concerns, with federal regulators receiving reports of at least 15 to 17 incidents between mid-2025 and early 2026, including low-speed collisions with fixed objects and rear-end strikes on stationary robotaxis.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around TSLA stock remained bullish over the past 24 hours, with message volume rising from low to normal levels. TSLA stock has fallen 16% year-to-date, though shares rose nearly 4% on Tuesday before trimming gains to close up 2.84%.
