On Tuesday, Google’s DeepMind announced the release of Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, a specialized AI model designed to discover, validate, and patch vulnerabilities quickly. The model will be exclusively available to governments and trusted partners via CodeMender, an AI-powered agent unveiled in October 2025, as part of a limited-access pilot program.
According to DeepMind, the lightweight model is both cost-efficient and highly capable, serving as an alternative to larger cybersecurity models. Consequently, CodeMender can call upon 3.5 Flash Cyber “multiple times at high speed and low cost,” allowing the AI agent to scan more code paths and find vulnerabilities.
The release accompanies Gemini 3.6 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite, which are optimized for coding and low-latency tasks, respectively. “Given the dual-use nature of this technology, we have taken an intentional approach to how we deploy 3.5 Flash Cyber,” Raluca Ada Popa, DeepMind’s Gemini Security Lead, and Four Flynn, vice president of security and privacy at DeepMind, said in a blog post.
Since 3.5 Flash Cyber runs solely inside CodeMender, it allows for guardrails that enable defense functions while disabling other cyber activity. This design helps prevent scenarios where a model might refuse to handle situations that prohibit defenders from performing forensic analysis.
In evaluations, 3.5 Flash Cyber outperformed Gemini 3.5 Flash and 3.6 Flash when unearthing new vulnerabilities. Additional stress-testing on complex projects like Google Chrome and Apple Safari showed it “significantly” surpassed Anthropic Claude Opus 4.6.
When tested on the V8 JavaScript Engine, Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber found 55 unique confirmed issues, compared to 47 found by Gemini 3.5 Flash and 36 found by Opus 4.6, including 10 issues no other model caught. Google said it’s also bringing CodeMender’s capabilities to customers via the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
