- A Polish court approved pretrial detention for Roman Ż., charged with computer fraud and organized crime membership in connection with crypto exchange Zondacrypto.
- Three other suspects were detained last week over an alleged scheme to seize assets of Zondacrypto founder Sylwester Suszek.
- Prosecutors allege the group misappropriated nearly €8 million from the exchange operator’s account to purchase property in France.
A Polish court has approved pretrial detention for a fifth suspect in the widening investigation into crypto exchange Zondacrypto, Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek said Monday. Roman Ż., identified under Polish naming conventions, was charged with organized criminal group membership and computer fraud involving client funds.
Prosecutors allege the group stole at least 7.8 million złoty (approximately $2 million) from users by making unauthorized changes to exchange data. Police detained Roman Ż. in Silesia on Saturday and seized exchange documents, though he denied the charges. The exchange, founded in 2014 as BitBay by Sylwester Suszek, rebranded to Zondacrypto after moving its registration to Estonia in 2020.
Zondacrypto froze withdrawals and went dark in April, and Estonia’s financial intelligence unit revoked its license on June 29. Przemysław Kral, the lawyer who became CEO after Suszek disappeared in March 2022, has not been Europe/Poland-estonia-cryptocurrency.html” target=”_blank”>seen since April 16, having told customers the exchange held 4,500 BTC that only Suszek could unlock.
Three other suspects—Anna P., Jaromira W. and Rafał Z.—were placed in pretrial detention on September 4. Among the allegations is that nearly €8 million left the operator’s account last October to buy property in France. Prosecutors say an organized group operated from 2020 to 2026 with the aim of taking over Suszek’s assets. The Katowice regional prosecutor’s office opened the case in April and has received several thousand complaints.
