Playdate Bans AI Art, Music, Writing from Games

Playdate bans AI-generated art and music, drawing a line after community backlash.

  • Panic has banned AI-generated art, music, and writing from its Playdate Catalog storefront, distinguishing between creative and coding AI.
  • Developers must still disclose if they use AI coding assistants like GitHub Copilot, but all creative AI content is now prohibited for third-party submissions.
  • The policy shift followed controversy over a game in Playdate Season 2 that used ChatGPT, leading to a stricter, no-AI rule for the upcoming Season 3.
  • The company positions itself as a pioneer, claiming to be one of the first major game storefronts to implement such a ban.

Panic, the maker of the niche Playdate handheld, has instituted a groundbreaking policy this month by banning AI-generated art, music, and writing from its Catalog storefront. This move directly responds to community concerns after a game in its curated Season 2 collection used generative AI tools.

Consequently, the company now enforces a clear distinction between different AI applications in development. While creative AI is prohibited, developers using assistants like GitHub Copilot must disclose this usage for transparency, according to the updated terms. Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser stated this was “an important step to take for both game quality and our community.”

The policy emerged after the discovery that Wheelsprung, a Season 2 title, utilized ChatGPT for writing assistance. Sasser acknowledged this oversight was a “naive” assumption by the team, as reported by Exp. He took full responsibility for the game slipping through their review process.

Meanwhile, Panic has adopted even stricter standards for its future curated releases. The company confirmed in a Bluesky post that Playdate Season 3 will exclude any AI use whatsoever. This comprehensive ban includes art, music, writing, and code for all selected titles.

By taking this stand, Panic sets its boutique platform apart from industry giants. Sasser noted, “We believe we’re one of the first (and possibly only?) digital game storefronts to do this,” in a statement to Game Developer, contrasting its policy with those of Steam and Nintendo.
