OpenAI Mulls AI Price Cuts Amid IPO Race, Tokenmaxxing Boom

OpenAI may slash AI prices amid rivalry with Anthropic and cheap open-source models

  • OpenAI is contemplating significant price cuts for its AI tokens in anticipation of a pricing war with rival Anthropic, according to the Wall Street Journal.
  • Both companies filed confidentially for IPOs this month but are not yet profitable, with OpenAI reporting a -122% adjusted operating margin in Q1 2026, meaning it lost $1.22 for every dollar earned.
  • Open-source inference providers are now offering Chinese models like DeepSeek for about one-thirteenth the price of closed Western models, creating intense downward pressure on pricing.

In the heated race toward dual initial public offerings, OpenAI is now reportedly considering drastic price cuts for its AI services, anticipating a similar move from chief rival Anthropic. This potential price war emerges as both unprofitable giants scramble to capture enterprise clients amidst soaring “tokenmaxxing” costs that are straining corporate budgets.

Consequently, the competitive landscape is shifting rapidly. For the first time, more companies are paying for Anthropic than OpenAI, with Anthropic achieving its first profitable quarter driven by the coding tool Claude Code. Meanwhile, the intense corporate spending on AI prompts has led JP Morgan analysts to publish a note titled “AI Bills Are Out of Control,” and Palantir CEO Alex Karp compared the practice to a porn addiction.

However, a powerful counterforce is emerging from open-source alternatives. As Tommy Shaughnessy of Delphi Ventures explained, Chinese labs provide frontier-grade models for free to inference providers, dramatically lowering the cost floor. This allows platforms to serve models like DeepSeek V4 at a tiny fraction of the price of closed models like Claude Opus, which they rival in coding benchmarks.

So far, most Chinese AI labs remain committed to this open-source approach. As long as that holds, any margin recovery for Western labs like OpenAI or Anthropic becomes a challenging math problem with no clean solution.
