- Beijing is considering allowing select Chinese firms like ByteDance and Alibaba to buy NVIDIA’s RTX PRO 5500 GPUs.
- ByteDance could seek roughly 1 million chips, with shipments potentially beginning in late December.
- Nvidia remains caught between U.S. export controls and China’s restrictions as investors watch for a broader market reopening.
- The RTX PRO 5500 is priced around $13,000 per chip, positioning it against Huawei’s Ascend 950PR.
Nvidia shares initially rose in overnight trading Sunday following reports that Beijing is weighing purchases of its RTX PRO 5500 GPUs by select domestic companies. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology asked firms including ByteDance and Alibaba to submit plans to buy the chips, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Nvidia has reportedly shipped a limited number of H200 chips to approved customers. “US firms continue to be restricted by a combination of outdated US export controls, which cover gaming products released nearly half a decade ago, and China’s own limits on US imports,” an Nvidia spokesperson told Reuters.
The RTX PRO 5500 is powerful enough for AI workloads despite sitting below Nvidia’s most advanced accelerators. ByteDance alone is considering an order of about 1 million chips, with shipments expected to begin in late December at an estimated 500,000 chips per quarter.
Each chip is priced at roughly $13,000, placing it in the same price range as Huawei‘s Ascend 950PR. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment for NVDA dipped over the weekend but optimistic remarks began emerging on the latest buzz.
