- Nous Research has launched an official Hermes Desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, moving beyond a terminal-only interface.
- The autonomous AI agent, which learns and saves reusable skills, is now available as a free, MIT-licensed download under version v0.15.2.
- This native app aims to close the accessibility gap with rivals like OpenClaw, which had shipped with a visual interface from the start.
- The desktop version retains the core agent functionality but adds a graphical interface, making it far more approachable for non-technical users.
Nous Research officially launched Hermes Desktop on June 2, providing a native public preview app for major desktop operating systems. This release marks a pivotal shift from requiring command-line expertise to offering a simple download-and-run experience.
Previously, all graphical interfaces for the self-improving AI agent were unofficial, third-party builds created by the community. Consequently, the terminal was a significant barrier to entry for non-developers interested in its unique architecture.
Hermes Agent distinguishes itself by learning from user interactions and saving successful approaches as reusable skill documents. However, its main open-source rival, OpenClaw, had already solved the accessibility problem with a built-in visual interface.
The new desktop app, built on Electron and React with a Python backend, runs the same agent core as the CLI version. It features persistent memory, natural-language scheduling, web browsing, and support for over 300 models through the Nous Portal.
Users can delegate tasks to sub-agents and reach the same agent across platforms like Telegram, Discord, and email. Meanwhile, the app provides five execution backends for sandboxed environments, including local, Docker, and SSH.
The portal offers a free tier, with paid Plus, Super, and Ultra plans available for monthly credits and model access. Nous Research notes the app is in public preview, meaning users should expect some rough edges as feedback is collected.
