UK Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has launched an official inquiry into Reform UK leader Nigel Farage following revelations he received a £5 million ($6.5 million) gift from prominent crypto donor Christopher Harborne. The funds were transferred in early 2024, just weeks before Farage decided to stand as a candidate in the general election according to reports.
Farage maintains the payment was a “personal, unconditional gift” to fund private security after an arson attack on his home. Consequently, he claims he was under no obligation to declare it under Commons rules. However, opponents argue he violated the code by failing to register it once elected, as rules mandate declaring any registrable benefits received in the preceding 12 months.
The rules also state that “both the possible motive of the giver and the use to which the gift is to be put should be considered.” Meanwhile, Harborne is a wealthy Tether shareholder who has donated over £22 million to Reform UK. Since the gift, Farage has publicly promoted Tether and proposed crypto-friendly policies.
