MultiversX has launched Supernova on testnet, a protocol upgrade that removes execution from the consensus path to eliminate a fundamental blockchain bottleneck. The design shifts the network from a synchronous model where validators must execute transactions before voting to an asynchronous pipeline where agreement happens first.
In conventional blockchains, the proposer selects and executes transactions locally before proposing a block with results. Supernova changes that order by letting proposers submit blocks without executing first, allowing validators to vote immediately while execution runs asynchronously in the background. The execution output is referenced in the next block header, so execution trails consensus by roughly one block or about 600 milliseconds.
Decoupling creates a validity problem, which Supernova addresses with a virtual mempool state that tracks pending nonces, expected balance consumption, and proposed transactions awaiting execution. Two additional safeguards support the pipeline: the Execution-Result Inclusion Estimator caps how many execution results a block can reference based on minimum-spec node capacity, while automatic backpressure reduces block capacity if execution falls too far behind.
MultiversX is an official CTDG Dev Hub partner, and Cointelegraph joined the network as a validator through the CTDG program in March 2026. The MultiversX Foundation delegated to the CTDG validator, and the Dev Hub team built a dedicated validator dashboard on MultiversX. Supernova has been producing 600-millisecond blocks on testnet and devnet since Aug. 20, with mainnet activation expected on Sept. 10, 2026.
