Netflix to Report Box Office Grosses for Six Upcoming Films

Netflix shifts strategy, reporting box office grosses and extending theatrical windows for six films.

  • Netflix will report box office grosses for six upcoming films for the first time, signaling a shift in its theatrical strategy.
  • La Bola Negra receives Netflix’s longest theatrical rollout at 46 days before streaming on December 2.
  • Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew gets a nearly 50-day wide IMAX release in 2027, while Charlie and the Chocolate Factory runs 47 days at Christmas.

Netflix is set to report box office grosses for six upcoming films, expanding theatrical windows in a significant strategic pivot for the streaming giant. The company will disclose figures for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, La Bola Negra, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, The Mosquito Bowl, and Ink, according to a Variety report.

La Bola Negra will receive Netflix’s longest theatrical rollout yet, with a 46-day release beginning October 16 before arriving on the platform on December 2. The film, starring Penélope Cruz, was acquired for $5 million after winning the Cannes jury prize for best director.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, directed by Greta Gerwig, will get a nearly 50-day wide release including IMAX screens in 2027. Meanwhile, the animated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will play wide for 47 days at Christmas.

Netflix has historically favored limited theatrical releases and declined to report box office figures, drawing resistance from cinema operators. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos told Bloomberg he could “see us doing things that we haven’t done before” with theaters but insisted the company remains streaming first.

However, Netflix insiders downplayed the broader significance, saying theatrical windows remain a bespoke decision based on what is right for each film. The current industry standard is a 45-day theatrical window.
