Institutional shift narrows altcoin rally to fewer winners

Institutional dominance narrows altcoin rallies as capital concentrates among top tokens

  • Institutional counterparties generated 72% of spot flow on Wintermute’s OTC desk in the first half of 2026, the highest share on record.
  • Institutional activity is concentrated in fewer tokens and fades faster after price surges, suggesting future altcoin rallies will be narrower.
  • The number of unique tokens traded by institutional clients grew only 24% over two years, versus 76% for retail clients.
  • Data from CryptoQuant and Kaiko shows altcoin capital and trading volume have already become more concentrated among top assets.
  • DWF Labs managing partner Andrei Grachev noted that broad altcoin rallies are giving way to selective sector moves as too many tokens compete for limited capital.

Wintermute reported that institutional counterparties generated 72% of spot flow across all tokens on its over-the-counter desk in the first half of 2026, the highest share on record, up from 61% in the second half of 2025. The findings, based on proprietary OTC flow data, indicate that future altcoin rallies could become narrower and more selective as institutional activity concentrates in fewer assets.

Consequently, liquidity is clustering around the tokens institutions favor while activity across the market’s “long tail” weakens. Between the first half of 2024 and the first half of 2026, the number of unique tokens traded by Wintermute’s institutional counterparties grew by just 24%, compared with 76% among retail clients.

Meanwhile, institutional activity following a token’s price surge faded after roughly one day, whereas retail activity remained elevated for about three days. On June 20, CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju said the traditional rotation of Bitcoin profits into smaller crypto assets had “basically disappeared,” with trading volume in Bitcoin-denominated altcoin pairs near its weakest level since 2021.

Kaiko identified a similar concentration in exchange trading, reporting that the ten largest altcoins accounted for 63% of altcoin trading volume in July 2025, up from about 50% months earlier. DWF Labs managing partner Andrei Grachev argued that broad altcoin rallies are giving way to selective sector moves, stating that too many tokens are competing for limited capital.
