The robotaxi debate intensifies as ARK Invest’s Chief Futurist Brett Winton said on X that Tesla’s Cybercab could expand the ride-hailing market by 30 to 60 times by testing demand at half the price or less. Analyst Gary Black, however, argues that Uber’s reach and platform strategy will prevail.
Black, managing director of The Future Fund, asked investors to assume that eight to 10 rivals will eventually build unsupervised autonomous vehicles at costs similar to Tesla’s, mirroring the competition in the broader EV market. Consequently, he says Uber can place those fleets on its app under a “Self-driving” option, leveraging its broader platform and marketing skills to win easily.
Black reiterated that unsupervised autonomy is becoming “table stakes” as Waymo, Baidu, Amazon, and other companies invest heavily in the technology. He compared today’s robotaxi optimism to Tesla’s abandoned goal of delivering 20 million vehicles annually by 2030, calling such market share assumptions “absurd.”
Meanwhile, Tesla is accelerating its autonomous rollout ahead of the Cybercab launch in Austin. Crowdsourced data from Robotaxi Tracker indicates Tesla may have nearly 200 vehicles operating without safety monitors across Texas, about seven times the fleet size from three weeks earlier. Black noted that Uber stock continues to outperform Tesla in 2026 and over the past three- and five-year periods, despite predictions that Robotaxi would make Uber obsolete.
