- Base creator Jesse Pollak and Channel 5 both distanced themselves from the project
Pump Fun and Kraken have deleted promotional posts for $LAPTOP, Hunter Biden’s laptop-themed memecoin launching Wednesday on Base, after intense backlash. Both firms promoted the token Monday, highlighting its availability on their platforms.
Threadguy called the token a “scam” that would dump “my low cap gems,” while Ansem compared it to poorly received celebrity launches. Rasmr went further, comparing the launch to 9/11.
Threadguy later said, “The problem is everybody knowing about it pre launch completely ruins any chance of success. malicious or not.” Market Bubble, hosted by Thomas and Faze Banks, cancelled its upcoming Thursday interview with Biden.
Some onlookers, including DonAlt, criticised the influencer narrative as hypocritical. One viral post noted the irony of influencers who promoted Trump, Iggy Azalea, Jason Derulo, and other celebrity coins drawing a moral line at Hunter Biden.
According to the Wall Street Journal, 30% of the supply goes to Biden and co-founders, while 20% goes to Biden’s Substack subscribers, Andrew Callahan’s mailing list, and traders who lost funds on Trump’s memecoin. It launches September 9 at 8 am EST on Pump Fun.
Base creator Jesse Pollak said Biden’s team approached them, but they chose “to be hands off” due to politics. Cobie dispelled rumours that Base itself was launching the token.
Channel 5, Callahan’s news channel, claimed no connection to the coin and said it would never “advertise crypto.” The channel said it pulled its subscriber list from Hunter’s team before any emails were sent, but received backlash for handing it over.
The laptop became a political flashpoint when the New York Post Ukraine-video”>published a story before the 2020 election claiming corruption by Joe Biden in Ukraine dealings. A Republican inquiry later found no wrongdoing by Joe Biden.
Hunter Biden has claimed to face millions in debt and has struggled to pay legal costs for criminal cases. In 2024 he pleaded guilty to tax charges and was found guilty of being an illegal drug user in possession of a gun, receiving a pardon from his father.
