AI CEOs Urge UN Cooperation on Catastrophic Risks

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei addressed the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, calling for coordinated global action to manage the dangers of advanced artificial intelligence. Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, both leaders stressed that governments must work with the industry to establish international safety standards.

Altman argued that countries competing in AI must still cooperate when faced with a transformative technology. “We believe this must be one of those times,” he said. Amodei, who appeared by video, warned that AI could deliver breakthroughs in science and healthcare but also carry catastrophic risks, including the misuse of AI to engineer deadly bioweapons.

Consequently, Amodei urged governments to set aside their differences and confront what he called a shared global threat. “No leader, no company, and no nation can manage this alone,” he said. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are planning initial public offerings in the coming months.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump rejected calls to rein in AI development. He told the UN General Assembly that the U.S. would not stifle progress on a technology he described as bigger than the industrial revolution. Earlier this month, Amodei proposed a slower pace of AI development, a stance that Altman later publicly endorsed. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits for both OPEAZZX and ANTHZZX was bearish at the time of writing.
