- Bithumb discovered a breach of its internal employee communication system on Tuesday and notified Korean authorities the same day.
- The exchange is investigating whether customer member data was compromised, but stressed that the internal work system is separate from trading systems.
- The incident is part of a broader wave of cyberattacks that has hit 16 South Korean financial firms as of October 14, according to the Financial Supervisory Authority.
Bithumb, a major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, is investigating a data leak caused by a hack of its internal mobile system earlier this week. The exchange discovered the breach on Tuesday and immediately notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission, according to Yonhap News Agency.
“We are analyzing the exact scope, including the possibility of member information being involved,” Bithumb told Yonhap. “However, the internal work system is separated from the virtual asset trading system, so customer virtual assets cannot be accessed through this breach.” The exchange said it would provide an official announcement the following morning.
Meanwhile, this attack adds to a recent surge of cyber incidents in South Korea’s financial sector. During a meeting at the Financial Supervisory Authority headquarters on Wednesday, Governor Lee Chan-jin stated that cyberattacks had struck 16 local financial firms as of October 14.
Other recent victims include asset manager Mirae Asset Global Investments and Daishin Securities. Daishin reported that personal and credit information of 38,490 customers had been leaked. Mirae Asset confirmed it had blocked abnormal external access to some web systems and is investigating, but stated that investor information was not affected.
