Vitalik Buterin Donates $170K in ETH to Defend Sanctioned Privacy Protocol Developers

Ethereum co-founder supports legal defense of arrested Tornado Cash devs with 100 ETH contribution

  • Vitalik Buterin donated 50 ETH (approximately $170,000) to support Tornado Cash developers’ legal defense.
  • The contribution represents 25% of Roman Storm’s total legal defense fund through JusticeDAO.
  • Both Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev face legal challenges related to their work on Tornado Cash.
  • The donation comes amid ongoing controversy over US sanctions against Tornado Cash smart contracts.
  • The crypto community continues to show support for privacy tool developers facing legal challenges.

Ethereum Founder Backs Privacy Tool Developers

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has contributed 50 ETH ($170,000) to support the legal defense of Tornado Cash developers Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev, according to a December 31 announcement from the Juicebox project.

The donation arrives as both developers face legal challenges related to their work on Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixing service that allows users to conduct private transactions on the Ethereum blockchain.

Roman Storm confirmed that Buterin’s contribution constitutes approximately 25% of his $650,000 legal defense fund managed through JusticeDAO. The fund aims to support Storm’s defense against money laundering charges brought by US authorities.

The case has drawn attention from cryptocurrency advocates who question the legal basis for sanctioning smart contract addresses. Tornado Cash, as a decentralized protocol, operates through automated smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain, raising debates about developer liability for open-source code.

The support from Buterin signals growing industry concern over regulatory actions targeting privacy-focused cryptocurrency tools and their developers. The outcome of these legal proceedings could set precedents for future development of privacy-preserving technologies in the blockchain space.
