“Vibe Coding” Emerges as Latest AI Trend for No-Code App Development

  • A new trend called “vibe coding” allows non-technical users to create functional applications by conversationally guiding AI through the development process.
  • Using Claude 3.7 Sonnet, a journalist created a working typing game after 14 iterations without writing any code themselves.
  • While the approach enables rapid prototyping, the resulting software lacks professional polish and optimization, suggesting vibe coding is best for simple applications or initial prototypes.

"Vibe coding," a technique where users verbally guide AI to build software without writing code themselves, is gaining traction among AI enthusiasts. Unlike traditional development approaches, this method involves natural language conversations with AI models to iteratively build and refine applications, potentially democratizing software creation for non-technical users.

A reporter recently tested the viability of this approach by creating a functional typing game with Claude 3.7 Sonnet, which Decrypt’s tests identified as superior to Grok-3 for coding tasks. The experiment sought to determine whether conversational AI guidance could produce useful software without technical expertise.

The project began with a simple prompt: "Write a beautiful, relaxing game in which I must type out words fast to remain alive. The words are falling down and each letter has a vanishing effect as I type on them." Claude responded by generating what appeared to be complete game code, though initial testing revealed the start button was non-functional.

Rather than manually fixing the code—which would violate the principles of vibe coding—the reporter simply described the issue to Claude: "Nope. Nothing happens when I click the button. The game never starts." This prompted the AI to revise its implementation.

The development process continued through 14 conversational iterations. When the AI-generated game used only about ten different words, potentially creating a repetitive experience, the reporter suggested mixing real words with AI-generated ones as a simple solution that avoided complex dictionary integration.

The final product, while not professionally polished, was functional enough for colleagues to test and enjoy. One journalist even surpassed the creator’s high score. The game, named "Tranquil Type," is publicly available on itch.io, with the current record standing at 2,830 points.

Based on this experiment, the reporter identified several key insights for effective vibe coding:

  1. Rapid prototyping efficiency: The technique enables quick concept-to-implementation transitions with minimal technical knowledge, though experienced developers might benefit from using it primarily for initial drafts.

  2. Iterative refinement necessity: First attempts rarely produce perfect results, with success requiring multiple rounds of conversational feedback. While professional developers might switch to conventional debugging after obtaining a prototype, committed vibe coders should provide detailed, structured direction.

  3. Incremental development approach: Rather than attempting comprehensive implementation in one step, effective vibe coding involves building foundational elements before sequentially adding features and fixes.

  4. Quality limitations: While the approach can produce functional software, the results lack the optimization and refinement of professionally developed applications.

  5. Conversational debugging: Problems can be addressed by describing unwanted behaviors rather than analyzing code, though technical discussions may accelerate the process for those with programming knowledge.

While vibe coding won’t replace traditional software development for complex applications, it demonstrates AI’s potential to lower barriers to creation. The simplicity of this approach might prove sufficient for basic applications or prototypes that can later be refined through conventional development methods.

As the reporter notes, sometimes a straightforward implementation of a good concept can succeed commercially, citing Flappy Bird’s success despite its simplicity. For entrepreneurs with ideas but limited technical skills, vibe coding might provide a viable path to minimum viable products without requiring extensive programming knowledge.
