Three January mega-trade deals exclude the United States Now

January 2026 — EU seals landmark deals with India and MERCOSUR as Canada‑China tariff talks advance amid U.S. pressure.

  • Three major trade deals advanced in January 2026 without direct U.S. participation.
  • The European Union and India announced a large free-trade agreement affecting roughly 2 billion people.
  • The EU also sealed a partnership with MERCOSUR members that phases out most import duties over 15 years.
  • Canada and China negotiated tariff cuts on items like electric vehicles and canola oil, but the pact is paused amid U.S. pressure.
  • Observers link the shift in global trade alignments in part to prior U.S. tariff policies and trade tensions.

Three major trade agreements moved forward in January 2026 involving Europe, South America, Asia, and North America, while the United States did not directly participate. A landmark pact between the European Union and India was publicly announced, creating a broad free-trade zone and cutting most tariffs to lower consumer prices.

The deal between the EU and India covers goods from wine and chocolates to luxury cars and agricultural products and affects roughly 2 billion people; the agreement was described by Ursula von der Leyen as “the mother of all deals.” The announcement was widely reported and can be read in detail on the page that first outlined the agreement as announced.

On January 17, the EU formalized a partnership with MERCOSUR members Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, agreeing to reduce import duties on about 91%–92% of exports over a 15-year period. The EU is the largest investor in those countries, holding a trade stock near $467 billion, and the move was made public when the union signed a partnership agreement.

Negotiations between Canada and China advanced on a deal to cut tariffs on select products such as electric vehicles and canola oil, but Canada paused progress amid concerns about U.S. reactions. The U.S. president has publicly threatened to impose high tariffs — a stance that was reported when he reportedly “threatened to impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods” and later wrote on social media, “China is successfully and completely taking over the once Great Country of Canada. So sad to see it happen. I only hope they leave Ice Hockey alone!”
