Teen steals $13M in crypto via Google scams

Teen's lavish lifestyle fueled by $13 million crypto scam nets guilty plea.

  • A Canadian teen, Trenton Richard Johnston, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering after stealing over $13 million in cryptocurrency through social engineering scams.
  • Johnston and co-conspirators impersonated employees of Google and crypto firms like Trezor to trick victims into giving up access to their wallets.
  • He used over $1.2 million of the stolen funds to finance a lavish lifestyle, including luxury car rentals, private jet trips, and jewelry, before being apprehended in March 2024.
  • In a plea deal, Johnston surrendered cryptocurrency worth approximately $3.7 million and faces a recommended prison sentence of 51 to 63 months.

A Canadian teenager financed an “exotic lifestyle” of luxury cars and private jets by stealing over $13 million in cryptocurrency through elaborate social engineering schemes, according to US prosecutors. Trenton Richard Johnston, now 20, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering this week after a scam that spanned Miami and Los Angeles.

The scheme began around January 2024, involving impersonations of trusted entities like Google and Trezor. In one February incident, Johnston convinced a victim their accounts were compromised, stealing around $41,000 in Ether.

However, the most significant theft occurred less than a month later. Johnston and his team posed as representatives to trick a California victim, draining approximately $13 million in Bitcoin from their wallet.

Consequently, Johnston spent about $1.2 million of the illicit funds on an extravagant two-month spree. He purchased and rented luxury vehicles, including BMWs and a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, with the help of exotic car-rental owner Brandon Tardibone.

Meanwhile, stolen crypto also funded private jet rentals, a rental house in North Miami, and plane tickets. Johnston’s run ended in March when he was pulled over for speeding in a Rolls-Royce and found with suspected drugs.

Investigators seized his devices and notes, uncovering the fraud scheme. As part of his plea deal, Johnston has surrendered roughly 53.16 Bitcoin and 275.23 Ether, valued at $3.7 million.

Prosecutors have recommended a prison sentence of 51 to 63 months for Johnston in return for his full cooperation. They also recommended Tardibone serve 27 to 33 months for his role in money laundering.

This case highlights a growing trend where, as Cyvers CEO Deddy Lavid noted, “some of the biggest crypto thefts today are not driven by sophisticated code exploits, but by basic human manipulation.” He emphasized that “The attacker only needs to win the victim’s trust once, for a few minutes, and the loss can be permanent.”

The guilty plea represents another victory in the US crackdown on high-profile crypto scams. In a separate case, a Californian was sentenced to 70 months in prison for a related criminal enterprise.

Another Chinese national received a 20-year sentence in February for a global scam that stole more than $73 million from victims. Lavid argued the industry must move beyond user education to implement real-time security controls that prevent theft before execution.
