Starknet Hit by Multiple Outages After Latest Grinta Upgrade

  • Starknet faced two separate outages shortly after launching its “Grinta” upgrade.
  • The network went offline for a total of over five hours on September 2, 2025.
  • Recent issues included halted block production and an incident where 192 blocks were dropped.
  • The Grinta upgrade aimed to decentralize transaction ordering through multiple sequencers.
  • Other blockchain networks, such as Coinbase Base, Sui, and Solana, have also recently experienced downtime.

Starknet, an Ethereum-based layer-two blockchain, experienced two separate system outages on September 2, 2025, following the recent introduction of its “Grinta” upgrade. The incidents left the network offline for a combined total of over five hours as the team worked to resolve the problems.

According to official statements from Starknet on social media, the first outage lasted just over two hours, from 2:23am to 4:36am UTC. After service was restored, another period of downtime was announced less than two hours later. “Starknet is experiencing another downtime. Our engineers are hard at work fixing the issues,” the team said in a post, adding they expected the network to recover soon. Incident logs recorded a range of technical issues, including an instance where 192 blocks were dropped and an error in which the sequencer did not recognize specific code.

Starknet’s new Grinta upgrade is designed to make transaction ordering more decentralized. Instead of one system processing all transactions, the update introduced three independent sequencers. Sequencers collect and order transactions before final settlement, and now take turns creating blocks using a consensus mechanism.

Status updates on Starknet’s incident reporting page documented the progression and resolution of the outages. The platform’s most recent downtime prior to this was on July 18 and lasted for 13 minutes.

Starknet currently ranks as the 42nd largest blockchain network by total value locked, according to DeFiLlama. Ecosystem tracker L2BEAT labels Starknet as a “Stage 1” rollup, meaning it is in an early phase of development with some decentralized features already in place.

Downtime incidents have impacted other networks as well. Less than a month ago, Coinbase Base, another Ethereum scaling solution, experienced a 44-minute halt due to an “unsafe head delay,” leaving over 1,000 blocks with just one transaction each. Outside the Ethereum network, the Sui Blockchain was offline for two hours last November, while Solana has had multiple outages in the past. In contrast, Ethereum’s mainnet has maintained continuous operation for over 10 years, which the project marked with a commemorative NFT release in July.

Additional updates are expected as engineering teams continue to monitor and address the stability of Starknet’s services.
