- SpaceXAI released Grok 4.5 on July 8 at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output, less than half the price of comparable models from Anthropic and OpenAI.
- Elon Musk posted on X that the model is “roughly comparable to Opus 4.7” but faster, framing speed and cost as deliberate tradeoffs over raw benchmark performance.
- The model is not yet available in the EU, with SpaceXAI expecting European access in mid-July.
- Benchmark results are mixed: Grok 4.5 scored 53% on DeepSWE 1.1 (behind leaders) but beat GPT 5.5 on SWE Bench Pro at 64.7%.
SpaceXAI released Grok 4.5 on Wednesday, July 8, with pricing at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output. The model targets coders, engineers, and knowledge workers, with the company pitching cost efficiency over top-tier performance. Elon Musk posted on X that the model is “roughly comparable to Opus 4.7, but much faster,” referencing Anthropic’s previous flagship. Claude Opus 4.8 now leads at $5 input and $25 output, while OpenAI’s new GPT 5.6 Sol costs $5 input and $30 output.
Consequently, Grok 4.5’s pricing undercuts competitors by more than half, with faster output at 80 tokens per second. SpaceXAI published benchmark results showing a mixed picture: Grok 4.5 scored 53% on DeepSWE 1.1, behind Claude Opus 4.8 at 59% and GPT 5.5 at 67%, while Claude Fable 5 topped at 70%. However, on SWE Bench Pro, Grok 4.5 posted 64.7%, beating GPT 5.5’s 58.6% but trailing Opus 4.8 at 69.2% and Fable 5 at 80.4%.
Meanwhile, SpaceXAI emphasized efficiency: Grok 4.5 used an average of 15,954 output tokens per SWE Bench Pro task, while Opus 4.8 used 67,020 tokens—a 4.2x gap. The model was trained on developer session data from Cursor using tens of thousands of NVIDIA GB300 GPUs inside the Colossus supercomputer. Our quick test for creative writing was underwhelming, while a simple coding task was acceptable. The model is available via API with half a million tokens of context, but European users must wait until mid-July.
