Peter Schiff warns Bitcoin break below $50,000 could trigger crash to $20,000

Schiff warns Strategy's common equity at risk, Saylor cites institutional adoption of preferred stock.

  • Peter Schiff warned that Strategy‘s Bitcoin-driven capital structure promotes “excessive speculation” and could leave common shareholders with nothing.
  • Schiff reiterated his bearish Bitcoin outlook, predicting a break below $50,000 could drive prices as low as $20,000-$30,000.
  • Michael Saylor countered by highlighting that Strategy‘s preferred stock STRC is now the top holding in three major preferred-stock ETFs, signaling growing institutional adoption.

Strategy (MSTR) faces a stark divide this week as longtime Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff warned that the company’s common equity is headed to zero while Michael Saylor pointed to a milestone that suggests otherwise. Schiff on Thursday accused Saylor of promoting “excess speculation” and predicted Strategy‘s common equity will “eventually” be worthless, saying “Eventually the common stock equity will be worthless for Strategy.”

He also reiterated his bearish Bitcoin outlook on Anthony Pompliano’s podcast, stating “I don’t think this bear cycle is over.” Schiff explained that a breakdown below $50,000 could trigger a major leg down, with downside targets extending to $20,000-$30,000 if key support fails. Bitcoin currently trades near $63,000, down over 2% in the past 24 hours, with retail sentiment on Stocktwits shifting to ‘neutral’ from ‘bullish.’

Meanwhile, Saylor pushed a different narrative, announcing that Strategy‘s variable-rate perpetual preferred stock (STRC) has become the biggest holding in three major US preferred stock ETFs, including BlackRock’s iShares Preferred and Income Securities ETF, Virtus InfraCap’s US Preferred Stock ETF, and VanEck’s Preferred Securities ex Financials ETF. These funds collectively held $756 million across the three ETFs, with Saylor writing that “Digital Credit is going into the institutional mainstream.”

However, STRC still closed near $86 on Friday, more than 13% below its $100 par value despite growing institutional demand. According to data from Strategy CEO Phong Le, retail ownership of the security dropped from 78% in March to 71% by July, while average institutional allocation rose 105% to roughly $3.5 million per position over the same period.
