- OpenAI has launched the new ChatGPT-5 model, available to all users, including free accounts.
- ChatGPT-5 is designed to be smarter, faster, and more accurate in various fields, including healthcare and coding.
- The model has improved capabilities to recognize unfinished tasks, avoid speculation, and clearly state its limitations, according to OpenAI officials.
- With this release, Free users can now access a reasoning model for the first time, and OpenAI reports 700 million weekly active users on ChatGPT.
- Three ChatGPT-5 versions are available for developers through the API to fit different needs for speed and cost.
OpenAI announced on Thursday the release of its latest Artificial Intelligence model, ChatGPT-5. The model is now live for all users, including those with free accounts, and targets improved performance in writing, coding, and health care.
The company says ChatGPT-5 is smarter, faster, and more helpful than previous versions. It plans to make the upgrade available to Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users immediately. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT has reached 700 million weekly active users this week with the new rollout.
Michelle Pokrass, post-training lead at OpenAI, stated that, “GPT-5 has been trained to recognize when a task can’t be finished, avoid speculation and can explain limitations more clearly, which reduces unsupported claims compared to prior models.” In a briefing, CEO Sam Altman remarked, “I tried going back to GPT-4, and it was quite miserable.”
OpenAI indicated that the model’s “hallucination rate”—the tendency to generate false or made-up responses—has been lowered. The company said it completed 5,000 hours of safety evaluations during development.
For the first time, free users can use a reasoning model, which means ChatGPT-5 can perform internal checks before responding. Users on free accounts may face usage caps, after which they can access a lighter version called GPT-5 mini. Plus users have higher limits, while Pro users receive unlimited access and can use GPT-5 Pro. Enterprise and education account holders will gain access to GPT-5 about one week after the initial release.
Developers will be able to use three versions of the model—gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano—via the application programming interface (API), with each version optimized for different costs and speeds.
