- Charles Hoskinson criticized Ethereum‘s “world computer” concept, arguing that personal computing should prioritize privacy and user control.
- Midnight City could launch fully in the coming months, enabling AI agents to operate with their own wallets and identities.
- Midnight employs zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation, and trusted execution environments as privacy tools.
- All three tokens—Midnight, Cardano, and Ethereum—experienced price declines this week.
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson recently argued that Ethereum’s vision of a “world computer” was fundamentally flawed, proposing his own privacy-focused alternative built on Midnight. He described the approach as personal rather than shared, stating, “What they got wrong with this idea of one giant shared world computer. Computers are personal.”
Public blockchains expose too much user data, Hoskinson said, asking whether people want everyone to see their transactions and communications permanently. This problem grows as AI agents proliferate, requiring personal data to function effectively. He expressed discomfort sharing such data with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman or Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
Hoskinson’s solution involves a “night frame” personal computing box built on Midnight, using three privacy tools. Zero-knowledge proofs verify outcomes without revealing details, multi-party computation allows joint data processing without exposing inputs, and trusted execution environments run code in a sealed chip portion. He summarized, “What goes in, no one else can see.”
Midnight City will become fully operational within the next few months, Hoskinson announced, serving as a simulated world where AI agents can live, trade, and test each other. The platform already has approximately 14,000 beta testers, and users will be able to host an agent with its own wallet and identity. Agents could rent trading strategies from others, and the marketplace will reach Solana, Ethereum, Hyperliquid, and Binance, according to Google News.
Hoskinson warned that crypto might focus only on incremental speed and fee improvements or risk handing control to Wall Street. He urged builders to demonstrate what a crypto-native civilization would look like and downplayed chain rivalries, saying users should not worry about which network settles their transactions.
