Hedera Introduces Dynamic Address Book to Boost Network Decentralization

Streamlining Network Configuration through Automated Node Discovery and Management

  • Hedera network introduces Dynamic Address Book to automate node management and reduce manual oversight.
  • New system will allow node operators to control their network entries through mainnet transactions.
  • Implementation includes three new HAPI endpoints for node management operations.
  • Node Admin Key system ensures secure, authorized changes by operators.
  • Roll-out planned in two stages, with initial release 0.56 focusing on transaction endpoints.

Hedera Introduces Automated Node Management System, Reducing Council Oversight

Hedera is implementing a new Dynamic Address Book system that will automate node management and reduce dependency on manual Council oversight, marking a significant shift toward network decentralization. The update, detailed in HIP-869, enables node operators to manage their network entries independently through blockchain transactions.

Technical Infrastructure Updates

The new system introduces three primary transaction types for node management:

  • Node address updates
  • Service endpoint modifications
  • Node account associations

Each node operator will receive a Node Admin Key, providing cryptographic authorization for making changes to their network entries. This replaces the current system where the Hedera Governing Council must approve and implement all modifications.

Phased Implementation

The rollout follows a two-stage approach. Release 0.56 introduces the fundamental HAPI endpoints, while the second phase will enable daily Address Book updates synchronized with staking periods. This systematic approach aims to maintain network stability during the transition.

“The current registry system requires Council approval, configuration, and network restart for basic operations,” says Mark Blackman, Senior Director of Product at Hashgraph. The new system eliminates these requirements, potentially reducing network downtime and administrative overhead.

The Dynamic Address Book maintains essential network information including participant nodes, SDK transaction endpoints, and consensus weight values. By automating these processes, Hedera aims to create a more efficient, scalable network infrastructure while advancing its decentralization objectives.
