FATF: 84 global PPPs fight crime, crypto under-integrated

FATF finds most global public-private partnerships are shallow advisory forums.

  • The FATF’s July 2026 report identifies 84 public-private partnerships globally, but most operate at a shallow advisory level rather than deep operational collaboration.
  • The cryptoasset industry remains under-integrated into these partnerships, even as blockchain intelligence firms like Elliptic already participate in live case-level work.
  • Data protection rules are the primary obstacle to deeper information sharing, cited by over half of surveyed jurisdictions ahead of banking secrecy concerns.

In July 2026, the Financial Action Task Force published a report on global public-private partnerships, finding at least 84 such arrangements operating across every region. However, the report describes a spectrum where most partnerships sit at the shallower end as advisory forums rather than operational units that share case-level intelligence against named subjects.

The cryptoasset industry remains under-integrated into these frameworks, the report finds, even as blockchain intelligence firms already participate in the deeper collaborations that do exist. Elliptic, for example, worked with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to deliver training to officers from 11 Asia-Pacific countries on disrupting scam compounds using labeled blockchain data.

Meanwhile, Elliptic took part in an operational sprint led by the UK’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation, where analysts sat in the same room to trace transactions between sanctioned entities and regulated exchanges. The report identifies data protection rules as the main obstacle to such collaboration, cited by more than half of surveyed jurisdictions ahead of banking secrecy and unclear legal gateways.

The UK assumed the FATF Presidency on July 1, with information sharing among its stated priorities alongside a sharpened focus on fraud. The shift from advisory forums to operational actions like wallet freezing orders is what the FATF is asking its members to make over the next two years.
