  • Moo Deng-inspired Solana token reached $600 million market cap in November 2023.

Vitalik Buterin, the prominent figure behind Ethereum, has pledged 10 million Thai baht ($300,000) to support a young pygmy hippo at Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo.

The announcement, made via social media platform X on Thursday, marks a unique intersection between cryptocurrency philanthropy and wildlife conservation.

Cryptocurrency Meets Conservation

The donation comes with Buterin accepting the role of “adoptive father” to Moo Deng, a five-month-old pygmy hippo that has captured Thai social media attention.

The funds will support both general zoo operations and the construction of a dedicated habitat for pygmy hippos, an endangered species requiring specialized care.

What better way to do that than through a Christmas present to someone who is dear to all Thai people, Moo Deng, and who has become one of the most unexpected and important Thai celebrities on the world stage,” Buterin wrote in his communication to the zoo.

Memecoin Impact

The hippo’s popularity spawned MOODENG, a Solana-based cryptocurrency that achieved significant market recognition.

The token, named after the Thai term for “bouncy pork,” secured listings on major cryptocurrency exchanges including Binance and Coinbase.

Notable market movements include:

  • Market capitalization peaked above $600 million in November
  • Current value shows 60% decrease from all-time high
  • First non-canine/feline animal-themed token to achieve substantial trading volumes

The initiative represents Buterin’s acknowledgment of Thailand’s contribution to Ethereum’s ecosystem, following the successful developer conference held in the country last month.

He has additionally allocated 88 ETH for future wildlife conservation efforts, indicating a longer-term commitment to animal welfare projects.
